Howdy! 👋
Here are 5 things I wanted to share with you this week.
🧊 Speed Cubers
Maybe it’s just because I’m a dad now, but I did not expect this 40-minute documentary about Rubiks Cube speed competitors to have me choked up from beginning to end… and it did.
There’s no good reason not to watch it. Where to Watch
📈 A Man for All Markets
Ed Thorp is a name that more people should know. A couple of highlights from his life:
He built a prediction machine for roulette… for fun (with Claude Shannon) and therewith creating one of the first wearable computers.
He mathematically proved that you could overcome the house advantage in blackjack by counting cards and sold a book teaching everyone how it’s done.
He made a market-neutral hedge fund that made him a fortune
He did it all without neglecting the health of his family relationships, his body, or his mind (he’s 85 in the video below).
I first heard his story from this episode of the Founders podcast. It led to me reading his autobiography over a couple of short days.
We often celebrate the titans who are successful in the single dimension of business but rarely celebrate those who are able to do it without losing their soul like Ed did.
💬 Conversation Prompts
Our friends Dave and Tessa introduced these conversation prompt cards to us years ago. We bought all 4 of the sets that the store offered! They’re great for car rides, chats at home, or nights with friends. Sometimes you only get through 1 or 2 cards before hours have gone by. If you’re ever over at the house you should remind us to bring them out!
🎧 My Favorite Least Popular Song
What’s a song that you love the most that the least people seem to know about? I’d love for you to reply and tell me or leave it in the comments.
Here’s mine. This song creates an imaginary environment for me that I love. It’s minimal, it’s sad, it’s simple, but I find it beautiful. The lyrics have taken on different meanings for me over the years.
🔄 Frequency
“Frequency makes starting easier. Getting started is always a challenge. It’s hard to start a project from scratch, and it’s also hard each time you re-enter a project after a break. By working every day, you keep your momentum going.”
